MAN CITY’S £900M SCAM JUST BLEW UP ENGLISH FOOTBALL.

How Manchester City’s £900m financial case worked

Manchester City’s case was not about one questionable sponsorship or a single accounting error. An independent Premier League commission found the club guilty of serious financial-rule breaches spanning 2009/10 to 2017/18, with arrangements that inflated revenues and reduced reported costs by more than £900 million. At the centre of the ruling was what the commission called a “Disguised Funding Scheme.”

How the sponsorship system worked

According to the commission’s findings, commercial partners signed large sponsorship agreements with City but paid only part of the amounts ultimately recorded by the club. Abu Dhabi United Group, then City’s owner, funded the remaining balance. City then recorded the full sums as commercial sponsorship income. That distinction mattered because sponsorship revenue strengthened City’s position under football’s financial rules in a way direct owner funding did not.

The findings show that approximately £949.94 million was recorded as sponsorship income, while sponsors themselves contributed roughly £119.25 million. Around £830.69 million was funded through ADUG. The commission described relevant agreements as “sham” contracts because it concluded the paperwork did not reflect the true financial arrangements behind them.

It was not only about money coming in

The commission also found problems on the expense side. It concluded that City understated costs through arrangements involving player image rights and other structures, meaning the financial picture was distorted in two directions: revenue inflated, expenses hidden. Its conclusion was that City’s financial statements did not provide a true and fair view of the club’s finances. City strongly disputes those findings.

The investigation itself became part of the case

The ruling went further. The commission heard from 27 witnesses over 42 days and found City made “concerted efforts to stop and frustrate” the investigation, upholding the core cooperation charges against the club. It also concluded that some important witnesses gave evidence they knew was untrue in key respects. Those findings could become significant when punishment is considered.

Could City really lose 40 to 60 points?

No sanction has been imposed. Everton previously received a 10-point deduction, reduced to six on appeal, for one PSR breach. City’s case covers serious breaches across nine seasons. Football-finance expert Kieran Maguire has suggested a deduction of roughly 40 to 60 points could be conceivable, though that is his analysis, not a recommendation from the commission or an indication of what the Premier League will actually impose. Potential sanctions include fines, points deductions, and other sporting penalties. Expulsion has also been discussed as legally possible. But at this stage, Manchester City have not lost points, they have not been relegated, and no titles have been stripped.

Manchester City is fighting back

City maintains its innocence and says the decision contains material errors of law, principle and fact. CEO Ferran Soriano has called the case a “Premier League conspiracy theory”, and the club says it has evidence showing its owner did not secretly fund sponsorship agreements in the manner found by the commission. City has until 2 October to begin its appeal. After that comes the separate sanction process. The verdict has answered one enormous question. What English football decides these breaches are worth is still unknown.
